Course Objectives

Learning Outcomes / Educational Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the competencies necessary to:

Understand and apply the principles of professional development and nursing accountability, with reference to Italian Law Gelli 24/2017

Apply ethical codes and professional deontology in daily clinical practice

Analyze the Tuning Project and integrate the professional profile with the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) and the Italian National Qualifications Framework (QNQ)

Understand the historical evolution of the nursing profession in Italy and worldwide

Manage the governance of the clinical-care process, with attention to quality, safety, continuity, and outcomes

Promote continuous professional development (CPD) and lifelong learning (ECM)

Students will develop technical-professional and transversal competencies to practice nursing in a safe, responsible, and professionally aware manner.

Course Prerequisites

To participate effectively in the course, students should have acquired:

Basic knowledge of clinical nursing: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care

Introductory knowledge of ethics and professional deontology, accountability, and patient safety

Familiarity with main care settings: hospital, community, home care, and continuity of care

Ability to participate in group work, guided discussions, and analysis of simple clinical cases

Willingness to critically reflect on their professional development and nursing role

Group work and creation of posters on topics covered in class

Plenary presentations: each group presents the posters to the entire class

Guided discussion and critical reflection on professional development pathways

Assessment Methods

Assessment

Practical application: creation of posters and slides on topics covered in class; each group addresses a topic and then presents it to the entire class in a plenary session

Written exam: open-ended questions on professional and ethical aspects

Contents

Professional development and accountability: Law Gelli, civil and criminal liability, patient safety

Deontology and ethical codes: principles, dilemmas, and critical cases

Tuning Project, EQF, and QNQ: application to training pathways and competency development

Historical evolution of the nursing profession: schools, education, roles, and professional organizations

Governance of the clinical-care process: quality, safety, continuity, and outcomes

Continuing education (ECM) and professional development: competency growth and maintenance of professional comptencies. Technical-Professional Competencies

The technical-professional competencies are organized into six Activity Areas (AdA):

AdA 1: Professional Development and Accountability

Description: Management of the professional career and knowledge of national regulations.
Included competencies:

Apply the principles of Law Gelli 24/2017 in daily practice

Assume professional responsibility autonomously and collaboratively

Plan and manage individual professional development pathways

AdA 2: Deontology and Ethical Codes

Description: Ability to integrate ethical principles and codes of conduct into nursing practice.
Included competencies:

Apply the Nursing Code of Ethics and ethical guidelines

Recognize and manage ethical dilemmas and critical situations

Ensure correctness, transparency, and protection of the person receiving care

AdA 3: Tuning Project, EQF, and QNQ

Description: Understand and apply the European and National Qualifications Frameworks and Tuning principles.
Included competencies:

Analyze and position professional competencies within the EQF and QNQ

Identify the developmental pathway from basic to specialist and advanced competencies

Evaluate and plan professional development

AdA 4: Historical Evolution of the Nursing Profession

Description: Knowledge of the historical development of the profession, from the establishment of nursing schools to current models.
Included competencies:

Recognize major changes in nursing education and professional roles

Understand the evolution of organizational and professional contexts

Critically analyze the historical impact on current practice

AdA 5: Governance of the Clinical-Care Process

Description: Management of person-centered nursing care with attention to quality, safety, continuity, and outcomes.
Included competencies:

Plan and coordinate the clinical-care process

Ensure continuity of care across different settings

Monitor, evaluate, and improve clinical outcomes

AdA 6: Continuing Education and Professional Development (ECM)

Description: Continuous development of competencies according to ECM principles.
Included competencies:

Identify individual and team training needs

Integrate regulatory, deontological, and professional principles into practice

Participate in continuing education programs. Transversal Competencies

The transversal competencies are organized into four Activity Areas (AdA):

AdA 1: Cognitive Competencies

Analyze complex information

Make decisions based on regulations, ethics, and governance

Evaluate complex clinical cases

AdA 2: Emotional Competencies

Recognize and manage one’s own emotions and those of others

Demonstrate resilience, balance, and self-awareness in situations of professional responsibility

AdA 3: Social/Relational Competencies

Communicate clearly and empathetically

Collaborate effectively with colleagues, other professionals, and families

Support an integrated and professional work environment

AdA 4: Educational Competencies

Promote continuous learning for oneself and the team

Integrate ethical principles and professional updates into daily practice
