Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the student with a complete overview of the functioning of the hormonal system with the structural and functional characteristics of individual hormones and regulatory systems and the alterations underlying the main pathologies of the endocrine system, as well as the basis for understanding endocrine alterations secondary to other acute and chronic pathological conditions. The peculiarities of the endocrine regulatory systems at particular ages of life (pregnancy, early childhood and senescence) and the different clinical consequences in the relative settings will also be discussed.

Course Prerequisites

The course requires that the student has successfully passed the exam in Human Anatomy, Physiology and General Pathology

Teaching Methods

The course is based on lectures using set powerpoint presentations. To promote critical reflection and allow students the possibility of self-assessment, at the end of the course multiple-choice questions will be proposed with the help of the moodle platform (e-learning). Material taken from recent international literature will be used to integrate specific topics. During the lessons the teacher will also present real clinical cases to stimulate diagnostic ability and reflection on the personal and social impact of endocrine disease. Students are required to attend lessons as established in the course of study regulations and to sign the attendance sheet in order to take the exam. The teacher undertakes to make the presentations shown in lessons and other material of interest (articles) available through the University IT platforms (e.g. e-learning) to which students have access. All material useful for preparation (tests, articles or other) will be uploaded to the e-learning platform.

Assessment Methods

The exam of the Endocrinology module allows you to obtain a partial grade that will be used to establish the final grade after passing the test in the other modules that make up the Course. The final grade/ will be given by the average of the grades obtained in the exams of the other modules The following will be evaluated: - the degree of depth of the topic, - the ability to describe endocrine pathologies and the consequences of endocrine dysfunctions on the various organs and systems - the ability to analyze the diagnostic elements knowing how to make connections between the various topics. The clarity in the expression of the concepts presented and the ability to use the appropriate terminology will be particularly appreciated.
