Syllabus
Course Objectives
To navigate in the current competitive landscape, companies need to pay attention to innovation and emerging technologies. Innovation pervades the value chain of established companies, which very often are disrupted by new ventures with innovative value propositions. For all these reasons, companies - and managers and/or business analysts (on their behalf) – need to analyze real data to make their business decisions (re: technological advancements, innovation and operations management) to maintain their competitive advantage. The course’s purpose is to make students understand the fundamentals of innovation, technology and operations management. The course also provides a comprehensive overview of strategic choices of firms in a double-fold perspective (i.e. both descriptive and problem-solving).
Key objectives are to provide students:
- the knowledge base to develop their skills in the managerial field;
- the managerial tools to understand how deal with innovation and operations management related-issues.
To reach these aims, the course has been conceived with a balanced mix of theory and practice (case study discussion in workgroups). Specifically, during workgroups, students have the opportunity to collaborate in problem solving, to address real managerial challenges.
At the end of the course, therefore, students have to prove:
- they have learned the business language, and can use properly the typical management terms/vocabulary;
- they have learned the models to represent innovation, technology and operations management;
- they can correctly use the managerial tools useful for technology and innovation management.
Key objectives are to provide students:
- the knowledge base to develop their skills in the managerial field;
- the managerial tools to understand how deal with innovation and operations management related-issues.

Teaching Methods
15 hours in class (front lectures with slides uploaded on e-learning)

Assessment Methods
The examination will be held in person, in accordance with University regulations.
The full examination consists of a written test comprising six multiple-choice/closed-ended questions (accounting for approximately 40% of the final grade) and four open-ended questions requiring a short answer and/or a graphical illustration (accounting for approximately 60% of the final grade). The examination is designed to assess students’ knowledge and achievement of the expected learning outcomes.
The questions included in the written test will refer to the course content specified in the Syllabus and will be formulated to assess the student’s level of understanding, critical thinking skills, and ability to connect and apply the knowledge acquired in relation to the topics covered during the course.
The examination lasts 60 minutes.
The final grade is calculated as the sum of the points obtained. To pass the examination, students must achieve a grade of at least 18/30. Scores above 30 entitle students to receive honours.
Mid-term examinations will be organized in accordance with the rules and deadlines established in the academic calendar.
The first mid-term examination will cover the topics addressed during the first part of the course (corresponding to approximately the first 23 hours of teaching). Students who pass the first mid-term examination will be eligible to take the second mid-term examination, which will cover the topics addressed during the following (approximately) 22 hours of teaching, thereby completing the course content.
The mid-term examinations will be held in person and will consist of written tests. Each test will comprise two open-ended questions and three multiple-choice/closed-ended questions, to be completed in 30 minutes.
The first mid-term examination is passed with a score of at least 9/16.
The second mid-term examination is passed with a score of at least 9/16.
The final grade, converted to a 30-point scale, is equal to the sum of the grades obtained in the two mid-term examinations, provided that both examinations have been passed.
There are no differences in the course content or examination procedures between attending and non-attending students.
No other forms of assessment are provided.

Contents
The course aims to illustrate the role of innovation and technology in the current competitive environment. The course also provides an introduction to Operations Management in manufacturing and service companies, examined from a strategic and managerial perspective.

- Corporate Innovation: innovation management and competitive advantage;
- Operations Management.
Throughout the semester, these topics will be complemented by seminars, business cases, and guest lectures by managers and experts.
