Syllabus

Course Objectives


The aim of the course is to provide students with a solid foundation for understanding the fundamental principles of animal experimentation and the potential applications of using animal models, with a particular focus on sustainability-related aspects. Specifically, the course will address topics related to the production of animal-derived biomolecules that have a positive impact on human life, in accordance with the principles of economic, social, and environmental sustainability. A thorough understanding of the morphological and functional organization of various animal phyla will be an essential component for designing experimental approaches aimed at developing molecules of applied interest. The skills acquired during the course will be crucial both for students interested in applied research and for those planning to pursue a career in Research and Development (R&D) within companies involved in the production of animal-derived biomolecules for industrial or therapeutic purposes. Learning Outcomes By the end of the course, students will be able to: 1. Effectively conduct animal experimentation by applying the principles of the 3Rs: Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement; 2 Design research ideas based on the morphological organization of different animal phyla, as well as their life cycles, reproductive functions, and biological rhythms; 3. Describe the vertebrate and invertebrate models used in animal experimentation, evaluating their potential applications and the limitations of their use in the development of biomolecules; 4. Develop independent judgment regarding the proper planning of experiments involving different animal phyla; 5. Use major scientific databases to retrieve essential information for experimental design and methodological approaches. 6. Engage in discussions and express informed opinions on animal experimentation

Course Prerequisites


Although no specific prerequisites are required to attend the course, a basic knowledge of animal biology is recommended.

Teaching Methods


The teaching activity includes lectures and exercises useful for drafting a project idea: • The lectures will be conducted in the classroom by means of power point presentations; • The exercises will be conducted by the students, under the supervision of the teachers for any doubts and requests for clarification.

Assessment Methods


Alla fine del corso, una critica discussione del progetto proposto dagli studenti, sviluppato durante le ore di esercitazione, verrà condotta. Tale progetto verrà valutato dai docenti e farà media con i risultati della prova orale. La prova orale consisterà in una prova delle conoscenze acquisite dagli studenti durante il corso. La prova finale (esito progetto e prova orale) sarà considerata superata con un punteggio di almeno 18/30. I criteri che verranno utilizzati per testare la preparazione degli studenti saranno: il grado di conoscenza e dettaglio degli argomenti trattati, l’abilità di essere critici durante lo sviluppo del progetto legato alla sperimentazione animale, la chiarezza dei concetti presentati e le proprietà di linguaggio della terminologia utilizzata. Per valutazioni oltre i 28/30 verrà considerata l’attiva partecipazione degli studenti alle discussioni dei progetti proposti, oltre alla dimostrazione di avere ottime conoscenze e appropriate proprietà di linguaggio durante l’esame orale.

The course will be divided into 7 modules, divided by topic, including lectures, seminars, and exercises: 1. Introduction to animal models 2. Vertebrate animal models for sustainable production 3. Invertebrate animal models for the sustainable production of alternative proteins 4. Invertebrate animal models for the production of natural molecules with bioactive action and for drug development 5. Vertebrate animal models to test protein substitutes and natural molecules derived from invertebrates 6. Use of animal models to reduce environmental impact 7. Applications of the knowledge acquired to develop a project idea and and visits to specialized companies
