The course is based on lectures and practical exercises. Examples from recent international literature will be used to supplement specific topics.
Contents
The course introduces students to the fundamental concepts of hygiene, epidemiology, and public health, providing an overview of the concept of health and its determinants in the current context. Different types of epidemiological studies, both observational and experimental, will be illustrated, and basic notions on the design of scientific research will be provided. The course also explores the principles of prevention of infectious and chronic diseases, the levels of prevention (primary, secondary, and tertiary), and strategies for health promotion. Particular attention will be devoted to preventive interventions in pregnancy, including both general strategies and specific actions related to diet and maternal-infant health, as well as to prenatal and postnatal screenings, analyzed in relation to guidelines, effectiveness, appropriateness, and ethical aspects. Finally, topics related to health education and the organization of health services will be addressed.
