Course Objectives

At the end of Pathology and General Pharmacology course the student will be able to know:

– pathogenetic, cellular and molecular pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the most frequent diseases in humans and the response of the cell to alterations of the internal and external environment; processes that regulate the mechanisms of adaptation to cellular damage, repair and death; main investigations laboratory tests used in the diagnostic process of human pathologies and interpretation criteria of laboratory data;
– main biological characteristics of the microorganisms responsible for human infections and pathogenetic mechanisms; microorganism-environment relationships; infection control strategies; methodological approach in the diagnostic assessment of infections;
– know the general principles underlying the interaction between the human body and drugs and their mechanism of action and the setting of a correct dosage; assess the risk related to the use of drugs in relation to various factors (route of administration, adverse effects, drug intolerance, drug interactions; manage, store and use medicines in the hospital setting; Illustrate the main laws regarding the production and use of drugs

Course Prerequisites

Basic Knowledge of Cell Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Anatomy and Physiology

Assessment Methods

he assessment of the achievement of the objectives set by the Course consists of a final examination divided into the different teaching modules that make up the course. The examinations corresponding to the various modules of the Integrated Course will be held on the same day at different times.
In detail:

The examination for the General Pathology module consists of a written test with 33 multiple-choice questions, each with one correct answer, to be completed in 40 minutes. One point is awarded for each correct answer and zero points for an incorrect answer. No points will be deducted for wrong answers. A passing grade is achieved with a score of 18/30.

The examination for the Clinical Pathology module consists of a written test with 33 questions, each with two correct answers, to be completed in 40 minutes. One point is awarded only if both answers are correct, and zero points are awarded if even one answer is incorrect. No points will be deducted for wrong answers. A passing grade is achieved with a score of 18/30.

The questions in the examinations are intended to assess:

- knowledge and understanding of physiological and pathological mechanisms;

- the ability to apply knowledge and understanding;

ò the ability to learn the topics covered in the two aggregated courses.

The examination for the Microbiology module consists of a written test of 15 questions to be completed in 15 minutes. A partial examination with the same format is also provided. For assessment purposes, two points are awarded for each correct answer, and no points are awarded for unanswered or incorrect answers. The exam is passed with a score of 18.

The examination for the Pharmacology module consists of a written test made up of 27 questions and a written essay on a topic covered during the course.
For the evaluation of the test, each correct answer is worth one point and no points will be deducted for incorrect answers. The open-ended question may be worth from a minimum of −3 points to a maximum of 3 points.
To obtain a passing grade (18), the sum of the score obtained in the test and that obtained in the open-ended question must be 18/30. An optional oral integration may take place based on the evaluation of the essay or at the students’ request.

At the students’ request, the essays will be available for one week from the exam date and will then be permanently archived.

The final grade for the General Pathology and Pharmacology examination is calculated as the average of the grades obtained in the individual assessments of General Pathology, Clinical Pathology, and Pharmacology.
Students may choose to take the examination of a single course unit in one exam session, which will be recorded in their academic record as a partial assessment, and to take the remaining examinations in subsequent sessions. Once all assessments have been passed, students may register for the final recording session, in which the result obtained from the average of the grades of the different modules will be recorded.
