Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the student with a basic knowledge of disease mechanisms concerning cellular damage, the inflammatory and reparative process, the immune response with hints of immunopathology, the biological basis of neoplastic diseases. Issues relating to the basic and methodological principles of laboratory diagnostics in the field of hematology, hemostasis, cardiovascular, renal, hepatic and metabolic diseases will also be addressed. Students will also learn the basic knowledge of infectious diseases and basic cellular microbiology in particular of bacteria, fungi and viruses.
The course aims to provide the student with the knowledge for the interaction between the organism and drugs in normal and pathological conditions, and the possible therapeutic implications

The course consists of the following modules:
- General pathology and immunology
- Microbiology and clinical microbiology
- Clinical pathology
- General pharmacology

Expected Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course of General Pathology and Immunology the student will be able to orient himself in the concepts of etiology and pathogenesis, genetic and acquired diseases, acute and chronic diseases. In addition, basic knowledge of disease mechanisms will provide access to a better understanding of clinical medicine
At the end of the course of Clinical Pathology the student will have a basic knowledge of the main first-level diagnostic tests. He will know the precautions to be taken when taking biological samples and the limits and strengths of the main diagnostic tests

For the Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology part, at the end of the course the students will have acquired basic knowledge relating to infectious processes and basic cellular microbiology

At the end of the General Pharmacology course, the student will be able to:

1. know the general principles underlying the interaction between the human body and drugs and their mechanism of action and the setting of a correct dosage
2. assess the risk related to the use of drugs in relation to various factors (route of administration, adverse effects, drug intolerance, drug interactions
3. manage, store and use medicines in the hospital setting.
4. illustrate the main laws regarding the production and use of drugs

Course Prerequisites

The course does not require propaedeutics.
To profitably follow the course of General Pathology and Immunology, the elementary notions of cellular and molecular biology are sufficient.
To profitably follow the course of Clinical Pathology, the elementary notions of cellular and molecular biology are sufficient. The necessary notions of pathophysiology will be introduced in class by the lecturer.
The Microbiology module requires basic knowledge does not require basic knowledge as the basics of the subject will be covered.
The General Pharmacology module requires a basic knowledge of chemistry and biochemistry, learned in the previous modules, and of anatomy and physiology carried out in the corresponding first year courses.

Assessment Methods

The General Pathology and Immunology exam is written and consists of one open question (which the student chooses from two proposed by the teacher) and ten closed questions (one correct answer only).
The time for the test is 45 minutes.
The grade is 16 points for the open question and 15 for the ten closed questions (1.5 points per question) equivalent to 30+1, 30 with honors

The Clinical Pathology exam is written and consists of one open question (which the student chooses from two proposed by the teacher) and ten closed questions (one correct answer only).
The time for the test is 45 minutes.
The grade is 16 points for the open question and 15 for the ten closed questions (1.5 points per question) equivalent to 30+1, 30 with honors

The Microbiology and clinical microbiology exam consists of ongoing tests and a written quiz exam. The microbiology exam consists of a multiple-choice test with crosses in which only one answer is correct. For each question you have 1 minute available. For the evaluation: for each correct answer 1 point, for each incorrect answer 0 points, for each incorrect answer 0 points.
The ongoing assessment will take place in the same way as the exam.

The Pharmacology exam consists of a quiz consisting in 27 questions regarding the different topics covered. The test also includes a composition on a topic covered during the course.
For the evaluation, each correct statement in the quiz will be worth one point and no points will be deducted for incorrect answers. The evaluation of the composition will range from a minimum of -3 points to a maximum of 3 points
A sufficient rating (18/30) must be reached, calculated as the sum between the mark obtained in the quiz and that obtained in the composition, to pass the examination. An oral examination may eventually be done on the basis of the evaluation of the test on student’s demand.
