Obiettivi Formativi

At the end of the course, the student will be capable of:
Proficiently understanding the intricate molecular and cellular processes within neurons and glia, as well as the organization of neural circuits, and how these elements collectively contribute to sensory information processing, motor control, sleep, memory, learning, emotions, language, thought, and motivated behavior.
Articulating the distinctive features underlying Central Nervous System (CNS) physiology and pathology, emphasizing the crucial role of neuron-glia interactions and the mechanisms involved in neurodegeneration
Formulating hypotheses about the complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors, as well as psychological experiences, and their contribution to the development of neurological and psychological disturbances.

Clearly explaining the various cellular and molecular causes of onset of significant CNS pathologies, such as Parkinson's, Huntington's, Alzheimer's diseases, epilepsy, migraine, ALS, schizophrenia, depression, bipolar spectrum disorders, autistic spectrum disorders, and ADHD, all from a molecular perspective.
Skillfully defining and elucidating selected research approaches in Neuroscience, specifically tailored for studying CNS pathologies, thereby showcasing an in-depth comprehension of cutting-edge methodologies employed in this field

Prerequisiti

Good knowledge of Physiology and Neurophysiology in particular

Metodi didattici

The teaching activities for this course encompass a diverse range of engaging methods to facilitate effective learning. The core of the instruction involves classical lectures complemented by comprehensive review papers and multimedia presentations for each pathology, enhancing students' understanding and retention.
Additionally, seminars will be conducted, providing students with valuable insights and in-depth discussions on relevant topics. To foster active participation and critical thinking, we will also incorporate flipped classes. In these sessions, students will independently study recent physio-pathological literature, videos, and movies related to the subject matter, and then come together to engage in scientific discussions and share their insights with their peers.
The flipped class activity will play a pivotal role in the overall evaluation process, allowing students to demonstrate their comprehension, analytical skills, and ability to apply knowledge effectively. This approach aims to create a dynamic and interactive learning environment, promoting a deeper understanding of the subject matter and encouraging students to take an active role in their educational journey.

Verifica Apprendimento

The exam assesses students' understanding of the molecular aspects of the pathologies covered in the course.
Each student will critically analyze a scientific article and discuss it before in small groups to encourage collaboration and scientific discussion.
Main objectives:
Demonstrate knowledge of the cellular and molecular aspects of the physiological and pathological issues presented during the lectures.
Critically analyze relevant scientific literature.
Connect the article’s content to course topics, which are all part of the exam

Students must present the chosen article on the exam day.
To pass, they must engage in a scientific discussion using appropriate terminology.

The final grade (out of 30) will be assigned by the Examination Committee, considering the quality of analysis, scientific language use, and active participation in class discussions.
The criteria for evaluation are designed to motivate students to engage deeply with the material and encourage active involvement in classroom discussions.
