Description
Andrea De Lerma Barbaro, born on May 6 1961, graduated in Biological Sciences in 1984, is a university researcher at the University of Insubria in Varese since 2001.
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
In the past, Dr. De Lerma has mainly focused on analyzing the basic mechanisms of MHC class II gene expression regulation, applying this knowledge
a) to the study of mechanisms of infectious diseases (specifically, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the human retroviruses HIV and HTLVII)
b) the development of prophylactic and therapeutic vaccination strategies for cancer immunotherapy
More recently, De Lerma has investigated the tumor microenvironment and the systemic effects of neoplastic disease
a) the effect of chronic inflammation on intestinal mucosal stem cells
b) the nonlinear relationship between the total amount of tumor tissue and the state of cachexia
c) metabolic reprogramming aimed at supporting cancer immunotherapy.
In addition, De Lerma investigated topics specific to comparative immunology
a) in the field of insect immunity, the strategies used by X. nematophila, an entomopathogenic bacterium, to evade the defense response
b) from a historical perspective, the evolution of adaptive immunity receptors
TEACHING ACTIVITIES
-From 2001 to 2017, De Lerma taught courses in Immunology and General Pathology for the Health Sciences degree programs at the University of Insubria.
-From 2012 to 2026, De Lerma taught the course in Basic Immunology for the three-year degree program in Biology at the University of Insubria.
-From 2016 to 2026, De Lerma has been teaching courses in Immunology of Cancer and Neuroimmunology and, subsequently, in Immunopathology for the Master's Degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Insubria.
-From 2022 to 2026, De Lerma is a lecturer in General Pathology and Clinical Pathology for the Nursing Sciences degree program at the Busto Arsizio hospital of the University of Insubria in Varese.

Overview
investigation of the tumour microenvironment and the systemic effects of neoplastic disease. More specifically,
a) the effect of a state of chronic inflammation on the stem cell of the intestinal mucosa b) the non-linear relationship between the overall amount of tumour tissue and the state of cachexia c) metabolic reprogramming to support cancer immunotherapy.
In addition, in the field of insect immunity, the study of the strategies of escape from the host defence response by entomopathogenic infectious agents.
