REDESM was created by the Inter-University Research Center at the International Forum for Democracy and Religions (FIDR) (https://irc-fidr.it) to foster engagement and exchange between researchers interested in understanding the current role of religions and their public management in the Mediterranean area. REDESM has opted for a multi- and inter-disciplinary approach that sees scholars of the social, legal, economic, historical and theological sciences come together, in their diverse languages, in a context inspired by academic freedom and mutual respect.
REDESM is convinced that, in religious matters, the two shores of the Mediterranean have much to say and that it is possible to understand the questions related to each shore only through a synoptic reading of their reciprocal experiences. For this reason, REDESM is open to collaboration with other national and international research centers and networks (see section Our Network).
REDESM is open to proposals and contributions of interested researchers and, through organizing conferences, seminars, and summer/winter schools, aims at active involvement of students, PhD candidates, researchers, and professors and encourages their research on topics relevant to the Center’s mission.
REDESM, with a view to promoting the Third Mission (involvement of the University with local communities), also seeks to be a center for debate and comparative analysis between scholars and leaders of religious communities, public institutions, and economic agencies in the Mediterranean space. In addition, jointly with FIDR, REDESM promotes training initiatives on topics dealing with the relationship between laws, economies, and religions in the Mediterranean space.
REDESM is open to the Insubrian territory (Como and Varese) and its communities and, within those geographical borders, sponsors meetings focused on interconnection and exchange.
