Overview

Full professor of comparative anatomy and cell biology (SSD BIO/06) at the Department of Biotechnology and Life Sciences (DBSV), University of Insubria. She is president of the Joint Faculty–Student Committee. In 1990, she graduated in pharmacy at the University of Milan. In 1993 and 1995, she was Visiting Researcher at the University of Notre Dame (Indiana, USA) where she studied the activity of enzymes involved in the glyco-sphingolipid pathway. Since 2007 she is a member of the PhD Board in Life Sciences and Biotechnology. She has been Supervisor and Tutor of numerous PhD and master' students. Scientific Activities: She studied membrane lipid expression and enzyme activities, involved in their biosynthesis, as diagnostic method in sphingolipidosis and as potential biomarkers for neoplasia (LS2_8). She also used Xenopus laevis embryos for FETAX (Frog Embryo Teratogenesis Assay in Xenopus) bioassay to evaluate the teratogenic risk of xenobiotics (LS3_6 and LS3_7). She is also interested in toxicity and gene expression modifications induced by metal nanoparticles both in cell cultures and in animals (LS2_8). Currently, one of the research project is focused on the study of nanoparticle systems for biotechnological and medical uses (LS9_2 and LS3_12). This research was awarded by “Telecom Italia working capital” and by European Commission H2020 “HOTZYMES” Grant Agreement Number 829162. The second research project is focused on the study of mesenchymal stem cells and their derivatives, in combination or not with biocompatible scaffolds for applications in regenerative medicine (LS3_12) and granted by Integra LifeSciences, a global medical device manufacturing company in Princeton, New Jersey. Full professor at the Department of Biotechnology and Life Sciences (DBSV) of the University of Insubria. She is president of the Degree Course in Biological Sciences, and is a member of the Board of the PhD in Biotechnology Life Sciences of the University of Insubria. In 1990, she graduated in pharmacy at the University of Milan; in 1993 and 1995 she was Visiting Researcher at the University of Notre Dame (Indiana, USA) where she studied the activity of enzymes involved in the glyco-sphingolipid pathway. From 2013 to 2016, she was a member of the COST team "MODENA-Modeling Nanomaterials Toxicity". In 2013, she was Principal Investigator of the project "NANOSTEM - toxicity of nanoparticles on mesenchymal stem cells" supported by the Cariplo Foundation. Furthermore, in 2013 she was Unit Coordinator for the University of Insubria of the Research Project of National Interest (PRIN): The "Systems Biology" in the study of the effects of xenobiotics in marine organisms for the evaluation of the state of health of the environment : biotechnological applications for potential restoration strategies.
Currently, her research lines are focused on studies of nanoparticle systems for biotechnological uses and the applications of adipose stem cells, and their derivatives, for regenerative medicine. She is the author of over 100 publications and book chapters and the didactic book “Biology cell and tissue (Edi-Ermes).

HOTZYMES: Redesigning biocatalysis: Thermal-tuning of one-pot multienzymatic cascades by nanoactuation - Enzymatic cascades open a path to the efficient implementation of complex biotransformations for producing from high-cost pharmaceuticals to low-cost biocommodities. However, for multi-step synthetic schemes catalyzed by incompatible or unpaired enzymatic cascades, efficient cell-free one-pot systems, where enzymes are perfectly orchestrated and regulated, have yet to be developed. In HOTZYMES, we propose to develop a new ground-breaking concept to exert functional control over different enzymes using magnetic heating. We expect to control enzyme activity by conjugating enzymes and magnetic nanoparticles and tuning temperature gradients at the nanoscale to precisely and locally reach the optimal temperature of each immobilized enzyme. This will allow an unprecedented spatio-temporal control over the kinetics of multi-enzymatic cascades by remotely applying alternating magnetic fields. To ensure an easy separation, re-utilization and integration into bioreactors, these conjugates will be integrated within porous microparticles. To meet this technological break-through we will need to design and fabricate a new generation of magnetic bioreactors specific to the field of Biocatalysis. We will need to answer fundamental questions about the physical mechanisms that govern heat transfer/diffusion between magnetic materials and biomolecules at different spatial scales by bringing together different scientific and technological disciplines and expertise. HOTZYMES will thus contribute to change current industrial biotransformations from an unsatisfactory current paradigm (uncoordinated enzyme function, sequential reactions, disposable bioprocesses) into a game-changing breakthrough (coordinated enzyme function, concurrent reactions, recyclable bioprocesses).
